Whatever you end up doing, chances are it will be unimportant (in your terms) after 5 years. What will be important are the connections you made, the skills you learned, and the ideas that spawned from all the knowledge you gained. Not the actual papers you wrote.

One thing young PhD students worry too much about is how "relevant" their work will be. Listen to me, your PhD is *not* your Opus Magna. You don't have to make a Nobel-worthy discovery. It's a chance for you to *learn* to do real science. Pick a topic you want to learn about!
