Spent a big chunk of the last three months doing a tour of brain research labs and start-ups. At least half of them are not yet really known to the public. My conclusion is that we're about to increase our knowledge of how the brain works by many, many, many fold. As in,

Yes, the machines have already taken most of our jobs—and that's a good thing. They took jobs away from children, who now go to school. They took jobs away from the elderly, who now retire. They take our jobs on evenings, weekends, and vacations. And they took all the most… https://t.co/58uXPQ4BC9

🚨BREAKING: the @royalsociety publishes "Science in the Age of AI - How AI is changing the nature and method of scientific research," and it's a must-read for everyone interested in AI & science. My take on having children is that 1) many people underrate how incredible it is 2) society should be set up to help families thrive 3) people who do not want kids should not have kids 4) it's not the only source of meaning in life, ffs.

Previously unseen details of human brain structure revealed. Featured image: a single neuron with ~5,600 of the nerve fibers that connect to it. I feel overwhelming awe at nature's complexity and order. https://t.co/lLiEo6z1YQ https://t.co/bq8jtGCvWC

Proposed so far: - applied effective altruism - free energy principle - attention is all you need - against decadence >< for degrowth - accelerationism / time to build - cliodynamics - great polarisation - Simulation / AGI / transhumanism Excellent thread, taking notes! https://t.co/vhrwgArwLe

We misunderstand what makes a “good” school. A school that intakes students in the top 0.5% and outputs students who are in top 0.5% isn’t a good school. It’s just the students who are good. A good school intakes in students in the top 50% and outputs students in the top 5%.

When I left @OpenAI a little over a year ago, I signed a non-disparagement agreement, with non-disclosure about the agreement itself, for no other reason than to avoid losing my vested equity. (Thread)

I was reading 2023 Nobel laureate Katalin Kariko's book, Breaking Through. She was brutally honest about the academic system in US. And, here is an example section from her book. https://t.co/uU3Os6qTPr

These models have no understanding of what they're reading and saying -- with correspondingly unreliable, sometimes comical results. Yet, they're optimized to sound as knowledgeable and authoritative as possible. Not a good combination.

Observing the development of cognition in infants and toddlers is still our best window into the nature of human intelligence

Most of my academic friends know me for my work in generative AI, image and video diffusion models, vision and language, even fairness. But I don’t often talk about my passion for AI applications in fashion — which shaped my PhD thesis, and a good portion of my industry career. https://t.co/JSdUscQpUP

To all OpenAI employees, I want to say: Learn to feel the AGI. Act with the gravitas appropriate for what you're building. I believe you can "ship" the cultural change that's needed. I am counting on you. The world is counting on you. :openai-heart:

Building a tech startup feels like trying to get a PhD and an MBA at the same time. In a given day I’ll swap between code, white papers, marketing copy, and sales/support calls. Generalist dream job

there’s a genre of phrases that sound like they’re from the bible or like paradise lost, but really, really aren’t. like “there are cathedrals everywhere for those with the eyes to see” which is ofc a jordan peterson tweet about a bottle of evian. what are the others?

In 2020 my neighbor got a piano. I would hear her at 6am every few days. It was brutal the first year yall Today in 2024, I woke up to her playing a Concerto. I want to cry, please keep trying. What an honor it has been to hear this journey

Yes, I went to college for Music Composition and dropped out and taught myself software and now I’ve been at SpaceX for nearly 6 years and I’m a Lead Software Engineer. Again, high school degree only. https://t.co/YqIw7FOXeQ

if you gaslight yourself into thinking that your smart enough to figure something out, you will, eventually, figure it out
