"Mastery is the best goal because the rich can’t buy it, the impatient can’t rush it, the privileged can’t inherit it, and nobody can steal it. You can only earn it through hard work. Mastery is the ultimate status." @sivers

@emializh There's a reason 'school' is derived from the Greek 'scholē', meaning leisure. The life of the mind is ultimately a luxury and unfortunately we don't appreciate it enough as students.

I studied at IIT Bombay. I chose to do my PhD. I was 24 years old and unhappy. I did my PhD at Kyoto University. Always dreamed of working at big tech. Couldn't get in. I was 28 and unhappy. i don't really know how to articulate this but gamedev programmers are on an entire other level to non-games programmers repeatedly needing to solve problems that have never existed before, because the world you're creating them in has never existed changes you as a person

We're far more interested in a chess match between grandmasters than between AIs, even though the AIs are way better. I'm noticing the same thing with video and art. Once I realize it's made by AI I lose interest, no matter how good it is. Maybe a good sign for human creators?

Wow, diffusion models (used in AI image generation) are also game engines - a type of world simulation. By predicting the next frame of the classic shooter DOOM, you get a playable game at 20 fps without any underlying real game engine. This video is from the diffusion model. https://t.co/p13fSVvl7K
